The Spirit
of Taekwondo
The Spirit of
Taekwondo is also known as the Tenets of Taekwondo. A tenet is
something that is accepted as an important truth; a set of
established and fundamental beliefs.
The Spirit of
Taekwondo is the foundation of the Art, which is the positive
development of the total individual. But not just the individual,
students should also bring a positive influence to their
communities.
The Spirit of
Taekwondo is recited aloud at the beginning and end of every class.
It is important that students know these are not merely words but
are the characteristics that one must possess if he/she is to ever
become a true student of the Art.
The Spirit of
Taekwondo is:
- Respect
Thoughtfulness: To show consideration to somebody or something;
A feeling or attitude of admiration and deference toward
somebody or something.
- Courage
Quality of being brave: the ability to face danger, difficulty,
uncertainty, or pain without being overcome by fear or being
deflected from a chosen course of action.
- Courtesy
Polite or considerate behavior: politeness that shows
consideration for other people or good manners.
- Humility
Modesty or respectfulness: the quality of being modest or
respectful.
- Integrity
Possession of firm principles: the quality of possessing and
steadfastly adhering to high moral principles or professional
standards.

Perseverance
Determined continuation with something: steady and continued
action or belief, usually over a long period and especially
despite difficulties or setbacks.

Self-Control
Restraint: the ability to control your own behavior, especially
in terms of reactions and impulses.

Indomitable Spirit
Unconquerable: brave, determined, and impossible to defeat or
frighten.
